How does DMARC help prevent email fraud?

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) is an email authentication protocol that helps prevent email fraud by allowing email recipients to verify the sender of an email message. DMARC helps prevent domain hijacking, which is a common tactic of email fraudsters, by checking the alignment of SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) of a domain with the email message.

DMARC operates by providing instructions to email receivers as to how they should handle emails that appear to be from a domain but fail authentication checks, and it also instructs ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to report back to the domain owner about the emails that are being sent using their domain name.

By implementing DMARC, domain owners can control and monitor how their domain’s email messages are being sent, ensuring their domain is not being used fraudulently. In addition, DMARC can also help protect email users by preventing spoofing, phishing attacks, and other types of email fraud. As a result, DMARC makes it more difficult for email fraudsters to use fake emails to gain access to sensitive information, steal money or damage the reputation of individuals or organizations.
