FTP (File Transfer Protocol) was first defined in 1971, by Abhay Bhushan of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was originally developed to transfer files between different hosts on the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), which was the predecessor of the modern internet. Since then, FTP has been widely used for transferring files over computer networks.
