How do CSS style sheets work?

CSS style sheets work by providing a set of rules or instructions that define how HTML elements should be displayed in a web browser. They are essentially a set of instructions that are applied to HTML documents to visually style them.

The style sheet consists of a series of rules, each comprising a selector, a property, and a value. The selector targets the HTML element that the rule will apply to, the property dictates what aspect of the element will be styled, and the value specifies the actual style to be applied.

When a web page loads, the web browser reads both the HTML document and the CSS style sheet to determine how each element should be displayed. The styles specified in the style sheet override the default styles that are built into the browser, allowing developers to customize the look and feel of their web pages.

By using CSS, developers can separate the presentation of a web page from its content, allowing them to make changes to the styling without affecting the underlying HTML structure. This makes it easier to maintain and update web pages over time.
