How does DNS registration work?

DNS registration refers to the process of adding or updating domain names and associated IP addresses in a domain name system (DNS). Here’s how DNS registration works:

1. Purchase a domain name: First, you need to purchase a domain name from a domain registrar, such as GoDaddy, Namecheap or Google Domains, and pay its annual fee.

1. Choose a DNS provider: Then, you need to decide where to host your DNS records. Most domain registrars offer DNS hosting, but you can also use a third-party DNS provider like Amazon Route 53 or Cloudflare, which can provide you with additional features and reliability.

1. Configure DNS records: Once you have a DNS provider, you need to create DNS records that map your domain name to IP addresses or other records, like MX records for email. These records are stored in a DNS zone file that resides on your DNS provider’s name servers.

1. Publish DNS records: When you save your DNS records, they are propagated to DNS servers around the world, which allows anyone to access your website or services by typing your domain name into their web browser or other tool.

1. Update DNS records: If you change your server’s IP address, web hosting provider or other DNS records, you will need to update your DNS records in your DNS provider’s control panel. The changes will be pushed to the DNS servers, but it can take up to 48 hours for the changes to fully propagate across all DNS servers.

DNS registration is crucial for the proper functioning of websites and services because it enables users to find and connect to them using human-readable domain names instead of memorizing long IP addresses.
