What is the IMAP protocol?

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a protocol used to access and manage email messages stored on a mail server. It allows users to access their email accounts from multiple devices and webmail applications while maintaining synchronization between them. With IMAP, emails can be stored on a remote server, which provides users with easy access to their messages, even when they are not at their primary device. The protocol also enables users to manage and organize their email folders, flag messages for follow-up, and search for specific emails across all folders. Unlike POP3, which downloads and deletes messages from the server, IMAP allows messages to remain on the server, giving users the ability to manage them from multiple devices.
