OpenVZ, a server virtualization solution, operates on the operating system-level. That means OpenVZ containers share the same, single kernel – the core of an operating system. However, it also means that the kernel modules, used by VPN services for encryption, are not available inside the containers. While using OpenVPN in an OpenVZ container is more difficult than in an ordinary environment, it’s not impossible.
Here is a way to setup OpenVPN on an OpenVZ container:
1. Make Sure You Have TUN/TAP Enabled: Check with your VPS provider to ensure you have TUN/TAP enabled on your VPS.
1. Install OpenVPN: On your OpenVZ VPS, install OpenVPN. You can do so using “apt-get install openvpn” on a Debian/Ubuntu system, or “yum install openvpn” on a CentOS/Fedora system.
1. Set up OpenVPN Config Files: You’ll need to set up your OpenVPN server configuration file. This usually includes specifying the server IP, port, protocol, etc.
1. Configure Client: On your client device, install OpenVPN and place the client configuration file in the OpenVPN directory.
1. Start OpenVPN: Once everything is setup, you can start the OpenVPN server on your VPS using “service openvpn start” command.
1. Connect to VPN: On your client device, start OpenVPN and it should connect to your VPN server.
Remember that OpenVZ containers have their limitations due to the shared kernel, and performance may not be as good compared to a KVM or Xen VPS.
