How do backlinks work in SEO?


Search engine optimization (SEO) is a crucial part of digital marketing and building a strong online presence. One of the key elements of SEO is backlinks, also known as the inbound links or incoming links, which have great significance in determining the rank and relevance of your web page in search engine results. They refer to the links from outside domains that point to pages on your domain. In simpler terms, when another website links to yours, this is considered as a backlink (BrightEdge, n.d.).

In order to understand how backlinks work, it is essential to grasp the concept of ‘PageRank’ by Google, an algorithm used by Google Search to rank websites in their search engine results. It works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The more quality backlinks a page has, the higher its importance, or PageRank, is (Moz, n.d.).

Search engines, particularly Google, employ this methodology to assess a page’s credibility. A backlink from a highly reputable, trusted, and popular website carries higher weight, serving as a strong vote of confidence and improving your page ranking. To emphasise, it is not the quantity, but the quality of backlinks that matter (Search Engine Journal, 2020).

For instance, if a page discusses the impacts of climate change, and reliable sites like National Geographic and the UN’s Climate Change page link back to this page, Google algorithms will recognize the value and relevance of the original page. These credible backlinks signal that the page offers valuable content (Neil Patel, n.d.).

However, backlinks need to be built naturally and ethically, following a good SEO practice. Any strategy to artificially generate backlinks, like buying them, is a breach of Google’s guidelines and can lead to penalties like the de-indexing of your site (Google Support, n.d.).

In conclusion, backlinks play a fundamental role in SEO; it’s the backbone of Google’s web navigation. When used effectively, they can help boost traffic to your website and improve your SEO ranking. SEO is more than just keywords and content management; it’s also about building relationships with other websites to validate your site’s credibility and relevance.
