What is Netlinking?


Netlinking, also known as link building, is a key strategy in search engine optimization (SEO). It involves generating a network of links leading back to a website in order to boost its visibility and ranking on search engines such as Google. It is one of the main methods used to improve a site’s SEO by optimizing its inbound links, commonly known as backlinks.

Moz, a highly recognized source in the world of digital marketing, defines link building as “the process of acquiring hyperlinks from other websites to your own”. Each of these links act as votes or endorsements for your website, improving the website’s reputation and visibility in the eyes of search engines. However, quality is more important than quantity. In Google’s PageRank algorithm, a highly influential factor in SEO, links from authoritative and relevant sources have more weight in improving a website’s ranking.

The methods of netlinking are numerous and often involve creative strategies. Some common techniques include guest blogging, broken link building, and the use of social media. For example, in guest blogging, you write articles for other sites in your niche with a link back to your own site. This not only establishes you as an expert in your field but also generates significant backlinks. In broken link building, you find dead links on other websites, create content related to that dead link, and then suggest to the site owner to replace the broken link with a link to your working content. This has the added benefit of helping out the other site owner, which could help forge valuable partnerships.

In addition, creating high quality, valuable content that others naturally want to link to – also known as “link baiting” – is one of the “good practices” recommended by Google in its Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.

However, Google’s algorithms are specifically designed to identify and penalize manipulative or unnatural links, such as paid links, large-scale article marketing, and automated programs generating links to a website. Google’s guidelines for webmasters explicitly warns against these link schemes and recommends a more organic approach to building the link profile of a site.

In summary, netlinking is not just about generating as many inbound links as possible, it is about creating a network of quality, relevant links that align with your site’s content. These then serve as endorsements for your site, boosting its visibility and reputation with search engines, particularly Google.
