How is security handled in SNMP?

SNMP security is handled through various mechanisms such as authentication, authorization, and encryption.

1. Authentication: SNMP messages are authenticated by using community strings, which are similar to passwords. There are two types of community strings: read-only and read-write. Read-only community strings enable users to view data but not make changes. Read-write community strings allow users to both view data and make changes to the device’s configuration.

1. Authorization: SNMP includes access control, which enables administrators to restrict access to SNMP devices. Access control is configured using Access Control Lists (ACLs). ACLs allow administrators to limit which devices can communicate with a particular SNMP device and which actions each device can perform.

1. Encryption: SNMPv3 includes data encryption using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). An encryption key is used to encrypt and decrypt SNMP messages. SNMPv3 also includes message integrity, which protects against message modification and falsification.

Overall, SNMP security ensures that only authorized users have access to devices, and messages are secure and reliable.
