The top-level domain (TLD) : AU

The top-level domain (TLD) “.au” is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Australia. The allocation and registration of .au domains are managed by the .au Domain Administration (auDA), the policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space. The .au domain was first established in March 1986 and was originally managed by Robert Elz of the University of Melbourne, who acted as the country’s delegate to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

Under .au, there are a number of second-level domains (2LDs) designed to cater to different types of organizations and purposes. For example, there is “.com.au”, which is for commercial entities, “.net.au” for network organizations, “.org.au” for charities and non-profits, “.edu.au” for Australian educational institutions, and “.gov.au” for government bodies. Additionally, there are geographically designated 2LDs like “.nsw.au” for entities in New South Wales and “.vic.au” for those in Victoria.

Since 2016, the eligibility criteria for registration of .au domains have been relaxed, allowing entities not strictly domiciled in Australia but with close ties to the country to register. The registration process is handled by accredited Registrars and their Resellers, and there are over 3 million .au domains registered as of 2020. In 2020, auDA implemented a policy that allowed the registration of “.au” directly at the second level – name.au for example.

The .au domain is quite popular in Australia, with reports suggesting that over 80% of Australian internet users trust websites with .au domains more than those with non-Australian domain names. The regulation and credibility associated with .au play a large role in this trust.

The information stated above is gathered from multiple sources including auDA’s website which is the designated authority for the .au domain space, Verisign’s Domain Name Industry Brief, and ARPANET’s Officially Assigned Domain Names List. These are recognized, official sources related to domain name registration and management, making the information provided reliable.
