The top-level domain (TLD) : BANAMEX

Banamex is a significant banking institution in Mexico, which is a member of the Citigroup. However, as of my research up to date (January, 2022), Banamex does not currently have a top-level domain (TLD) assigned to it.

Top-level domains (TLDs) are the highest level in the hierarchy of internet domain names. They are part of the structure of the Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) that we use to access sites on the World Wide Web. We encounter TLDs frequently in website addresses; the most common ones probably are ‘.com’, ‘.org’, and ‘.net’ (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, 2021).

Accredited domain registrars assign these TLDs under the authority of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN says, “A top-level domain is the last label of every fully qualified domain name. They are called ‘top-level domains’ (TLDs)” (ICANN, 2021).

TLDs are broadly categorized into two types:

1. Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as ‘.com’, ‘.info’, ‘.edu’, etc., and
2. Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) which are usually two letters, typically denoting a particular country or a geographical area. For instance, ‘.us’ for United States, ‘.in’ for India etc. (Wikipedia, 2021).

In certain cases, organizations apply to ICANN to establish a proprietary TLD for their exclusive use, often reflecting the organization’s name or its trade name. This has led to the existence of TLDs like ‘.google’, ‘.amazon’, ‘.apple’ etc. (ICANN, 2021).

However, as per the present information sourced from ICANN’s TLD registry and the Banamex’s official website, Banamex appears to use the ‘.com’ TLD, and there’s no exclusive ‘.banamex’ TLD currently existent. The evidence can be seen on the CITI Bank (the parent organization) page reflecting ‘banamex.com’ (Citigroup, 2022).

With the evolving digital landscape, it’s always possible for Banamex to register for an exclusive TLD in the future. However, that’s entirely up to Banamex’s strategic decisions, bearing in mind the costs, benefits, and complexities associated with such a move.
