The top-level domain (TLD) : IPIRANGA

As of the time of research and writing, the top-level domain (TLD) “.ipiranga” does not exist. A top-level domain (TLD) can be simply explained as the last segment of a domain name – the letters that come to the end of a web address immediately after the final dot. Examples include .com, .org, .gov, .edu, and country-specific ones like .uk, .de, and .br among others.

However, related to your question is the fact that companies or organizations can apply for a customized TLD, known as a generic top-level domain (gTLD), through application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), an international organization responsible for managing domain names on the internet. As shown in the ICANN’s gTLD Applicant Guidebook, an organization that wants a gTLD will undergo a comprehensive evaluation process, including string reviews, applicant reviews, and a public comment period.

Here I can cite a similar case – Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), a Malaysian oil and gas company that applied for and was granted the gTLD “.petronas”. After the application process, the gTLD has been listed in the ‘Domain Name System’ (DNS) root, as per the data registry maintained by ICANN. Petronas became then the legitimate and exclusive registrant for all domain names ending in “.petronas” and was responsible for maintaining the security and operational integrity of its gTLD.

So, hypothetically, if the brand “Ipiranga”, a Brazilian energy company, were to apply for a gTLD, assuming it would be “.ipiranga”, it would need to undergo a similar process. If approved, this would mean that any domain ending in “.ipiranga” would be owned by, and representative of, said company.

However, as of now, there’s no official record indicating that the gTLD “.ipiranga” has been applied for or exists in the ICANN’s official gTLD registry, nor is included in a list of over 1,200 currently available gTLDs proposed in the 2012 application round (the most recent round as of 2021).

The information has mainly been extracted from ICANN (https://www.icann.org/) and its gTLD Applicant Guidebook (https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants/agb/guidebook-full-04jun12-en.pdf).

Please be aware that the mechanics of obtaining, operating, and maintaining a gTLD can be very complex, and go beyond the scope of this answer.

In conclusion, there is no TLD “.ipiranga” as of the present moment. However, if the Ipiranga company were to be granted a gTLD, it would allow them exclusivity and control over such domains, enhancing their branding strategies, digital presence and cybersecurity.
