The top-level domain (TLD) “MLS” is a domain extension that falls under the category of Generic top-level domains (gTLD). This type of domain extension is among the most heavily regulated and scrutinized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that manages domain names worldwide.
As per ICANN’s list of delegated new gTLDs, the “.MLS” extension currently belongs and is managed by the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) (“MLS” being an abbreviation for “Multiple Listing Service”).
The Canadian Real Estate Association, having a significant position in the real estate industry in Canada, aims to protect and promote the interests of its members, including real estate brokers, agents, and salespeople. Its use of the “.MLS” TLD is essentially designed to aid in the identification, promotion, and regulation of real estate listings managed by its members. They are primarily made available to real estate professionals who are members of CREA and participate in MLS.
However, obtaining a “.MLS” domain name is not as simple as registering a typical “.com” TLD. Since CREA manages this gTLD, there are stringent rules and regulations in place about who is eligible to register a “.MLS” domain name. In fact, as per the stipulations outlined in the Registry Agreement between CREA and ICANN, only members of the Canadian Real Estate Association are eligible to register a “.MLS” domain, and they use it to clearly identify their association with the Multiple Listing Service (MLS).
For example, if a real estate broker in Canada who is a member of CREA wished to enhance their online presence, they might register a domain like “brokername.MLS”. This would not only provide a boost in terms of search engine recognition but also could increase the trust factor among customers, knowing that the broker is a confirmed member of CREA and part of the Multiple Listing Service.
It’s notable that the introduction of gTLDs like “.MLS” was initiated to provide industry-specific domain options and help organizations better serve their members and the general public.
Please refer to the ICANN list of delegated new gTLDs and the Registry Agreement between CREA and ICANN for specific information on the “.MLS” top-level domain.
