The top-level domain (TLD) : NOKIA

Nokia does not currently have a top-level domain (TLD) designated beneath its name. Top-Level Domains are the suffixes at the end of web addresses that assist in domain classification. Common TLDs appear at the completion of web addresses (.com, .org, .gov, .edu, and .net, for example). ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the non-profit corporation that manages the world’s domain name system, regulates the distribution of TLDs.

The top companies globally often have their proprietary TLDs to enhance brand credibility and protect their trademarks online. Google, for instance, owns .google, while Amazon owns .amazon. However, in the case of Nokia, a Finnish multinational telecommunication, information technology, and consumer electronics company, there is no reference to a specific .nokia TLD.

Companies apply for their TLDs through ICANN’s new gTLD (generic top-level domain) program. The process wasn’t possible until 2012, when ICANN launched a hard-to-come-by application window for new TLDs. The application procedure is convoluted, with stringent requisites from ICANN that must be met, and it is expensive, with an $185,000 application fee, not including the cost of managing the TLD if approved. Throughout this process, ICANN evaluates whether the new domain would cause confusion or violate any trademarks (source: ICANN).

Another way TLDs get created is by indicating a specific geographical area; these are referred to as country-code top level domains (ccTLDs). Examples of ccTLDs are .fi for Finland or .us for the United States; however, these stand for countries and not companies or organizations (source: ICANN).

Hence, as of now, there isn’t a .nokia TLD. To the contrary, most of their URLs end with .com, such as www.nokia.com. To summarize, other notable corporations may have branded TLDs, but Nokia does not have its proprietary .nokia domain, perhaps because of the complex and costly nature of acquiring such a domain name.
