The top-level domain (TLD) : OBI

Currently, there is no top-level domain (TLD) named .OBI in the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS). According to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the global organization responsible for managing and coordinating the DNS, there is no TLD with the .OBI extension.

Top-level domains (TLD) are the letters found at the end of an internet address, and they can be either generic (gTLDs) or country-code (ccTLDs). gTLD examples include .com, .info, .net, .edu, etc., and ccTLD examples are .us, .uk, .fr, etc. According to ICANN’s database, as of now, there is no TLD with the .OBI extension.

The closest to .OBI is .BI, the country-code TLD for Burundi, as outlined in the IANA’s (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) Root Zone Database. IANA is a department of ICANN which oversees global IP address allocation, DNS root zone management, and other Internet protocol assignments.

There could potentially be a TLD .OBI in the future through a request for proposal (RFP) process, should it meet all of ICANN’s requirements and undergo a complete evaluation process. The New gTLD Program launched in 2012 by ICANN allows entities to apply for custom TLDs, subject to thorough examination and testing to ensure the DNS’s stability and security.

In the recent past, several new gTLDs have been introduced, such as .app, .shop, .blog, etc. For example, Google owns the .app TLD, which is aimed at app developers. The .shop TLD is owned by GMO Registry, a Tokyo-based company that aims to support online businesses. The .blog TLD is owned by Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, targeting bloggers and blogging platforms.

However, until the current date, no entity has proposed .OBI as a gTLD. In the case the .OBI gTLD application occurs in the future, the entity should demonstrate legitimate claims to the domain, as per ICANN’s guidance.

All of the provided information was inferred from the ICANN’s list of TLDs and the IANA Root Zone Database, along with other new gTLD information being made known through the ICANN’s New gTLD Program.
