The top-level domain (TLD) : OVH

OVH is one of the biggest European internet services companies that offers various services for internet professionals such as domain registration, web hosting, virtual private server (VPS), dedicated servers, and other related internet services. It also serves as a registrar for many internet domains. However, OVH is not a top level domain (TLD).

A top-level domain (TLD) is the last segment of the domain name. It’s the part that follows immediately after the “dot” symbol. Examples include .com, .org, .net, .gov, .edu, and so on. These are known as generic TLDs. There are also country code TLDs (ccTLDs) that represent specific geographic locations. For instance, .us, .uk., .fr are TLDs that represent United States, United Kingdom, and France respectively. There are also sponsored TLDs (sTLDs) such as .aero, .app, .edu or .gov that are used by specific groups, industries or organizations. Recently, a new class of TLDs have been implemented, called new generic top-level domains (nTLDs), that offer a wide array of choices for web addresses.

When you want to get a domain name, you will need to register it, either with a domain registrar accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) or a reseller of services provided by such a registrar, like OVH. OVH provides a large catalog for top-level domain choices and web hosting services. They offer services to register domains with TLDs including .com, .net, .org, .info, etc.

I used the following sources for this information:

1. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers): the not-for-profit partnership of people from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable (https://www.icann.org/).
2. OVH: the EU’s largest cloud hosting provider, with over 350,000+ websites hosted on their servers (https://www.ovh.co.uk/domains/).

These websites offer more detailed information about the intricacies of TLDs, their uses, and the significance of domain name registration. Particularly, ICANN is a great resource for domain name system services, while OVH provides more practical services toward domain names and web hosting. These sources are necessary for anyone looking to further understand the concept of TLDs and how domain names play a vital role in the internet infrastructure.
