The top-level domain (TLD) : PIN

Currently, there is no top-level domain (TLD) that uses the extension “.pin”. Top-level domains represent the highest level of domain names of the Internet. They are developed and managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

ICANN maintains a complete list of active TLDs on their website. As per the ICANN list, as of March 2022, the .pin TLD doesn’t exist. Some commonly known TLDs are .com, .org, .net, .gov, .edu and more. There are also country-specific TLDs like .us for the United States, .uk for the United Kingdom, .jp for Japan to name a few.

TLDs also include larger categories like gTLDs (generic top-level domains) and ccTLDs (country-code top-level domains). Examples of gTLDs include .com (commercial), .org (organization), .gov (government), while ccTLDs feature such codes as .uk (United Kingdom), .fr (France), and .au (Australia).

However, ICANN continues to introduce new TLDs to meet increasing demand for domain names and therefore the creation of a .pin TLD in the future is always a possibility.

Interestingly, the approval process for new TLDs isn’t easy. This involves a detailed proposal to ICANN that demonstrates technical competency, financial sustainability, as well as the proposed benefit of the new TLD. A notable example of this process was Google’s successful application for the .app TLD in 2015, which now services thousands of websites worldwide.

In conclusion, while a .pin TLD does not exist as of this moment, the ever-expanding digital world necessitates the creation of more new TLDs. However, this will require a detailed and diligent process of approval from ICANN or the relevant domain name authorities.
