Sanofi is a global life sciences company committed to improving access to healthcare and supporting the people faced with health challenges all over the world. The company engages in research, development, manufacture, and marketing of healthcare products. As far as I have found from reliable sources, however, the company does not have a top-level domain (TLD) that is ‘.sanofi’.
A top-level domain (TLD) is the last segment of the domain name. It follows immediately after the last dot in an Internet address. A TLD identifies something about the website associated with it, such as its purpose (e.g., “.com” for commercial), its owner, or the geographical area from which it originates. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is the organization responsible for regulating domain name system management and distribution of top-level domains.
Now, companies can indeed apply for branded TLDs. This has been made possible when in 2012 ICANN commenced a new program dramatically expanding the domain naming system for the first time in its history. This program enables organizations to apply for virtually any word in any script or language as their internet domain name extension. For instance, Google owns ‘.google’ and Barclays owns ‘.barclays.’
Returning to the case of Sanofi, even though it is a global brand, it does not seem to apply for or own a ‘.sanofi’ TLD. General search engine research does not show any evident use of a .sanofi domain. The official website for Sanofi operates under the ‘.com’ Top-Level Domain (www.sanofi.com).
In closing, while it is possible for a multinational company like Sanofi to own a ‘.sanofi’ top-level domain, as of this writing, my research didn’t uncover any use of ‘.sanofi’ TLD by the company.
