The top-level domain (TLD) .SEEK is currently not a recognized or established TLD on the internet. In the domain name system (DNS) hierarchy, a top-level domain (TLD) is one of the highest levels of domain names. Common examples include “.com”, “.org”, “.gov”, “.edu”, “.net”, etc., which frequent internet users are quite familiar with.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organization, is responsible for the creation and management of internet standards, including domain names. According to ICANN’s official database, there is no .SEEK top-level domain as of now (ICANN, 2021).
However, ICANN has a program for the creation of new generic top-level domains (gTLD) which allows entities to apply for new TLDs. The new gTLD program was designed to increase competition and choice in the domain name space (ICANN, 2021). Application guidelines are published and once an application gets approved, the new gTLD is added to the root domain database. According to this database, the .SEEK TLD has not been applied for, reviewed, or approved as of the time of this query.
It should be pointed out that gTLDs are often obtained by organizations which represent a particular industry or sector. .bank is managed by the banking industry, .edu by educational institutions, etc. It may be that a company named Seek or in the employment industry could apply for .SEEK in the future.
For example, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, purchased the gTLD .youtube to use domain names that represent the brand. Similarly, the Ford Motor Company owns the gTLD .ford. So, there is potential for Seek, an employment agency, to purchase and use the .SEEK gTLD should it become available.
Furthermore, country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) could feature these letters if their corresponding country could effectively use “SEEK” as an acronym. However, currently, the closest in existence to .SEEK is .SE which is the ccTLD for Sweden, according to a list maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
In conclusion, the TLD .SEEK is currently not in existence. Whether it will ever exist remains uncertain and largely dependent on whether an entity wishes to apply for it, pursues the approval process through ICANN, and ultimately receives approval.
