How does UDP handle flow control?


UDP (User Datagram Protocol) does not provide any inherent flow control mechanism. It simply sends the data packets to the destination without any error-checking or acknowledgement mechanism. This means that UDP data packets can be lost or damaged during transmission, and the sender will not be notified.

As a result, the application using UDP is responsible for implementing its own flow control mechanism to avoid overwhelming the receiver with too much data. This can be done by limiting the amount of data sent at a time, or by implementing an acknowledgement mechanism at the application layer.

Without proper flow control, UDP can cause congestion and network instability, especially in high-traffic situations. Thus, it is often recommended to use TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) instead of UDP if reliability and flow control are important factors in the communication.
