How to configure Application Performance Management settings in VCenter?


VMware vCenter is a centralized platform for managing your VMware vSphere environments, allowing you to automate and deliver a virtual infrastructure across the hybrid cloud with confidence. Configuring the Application Performance Management settings in vCenter Server involves a few steps where you can monitor application performance, set up alarms, and more. Following is a step by step guide sourced from VMware product documentation on VMware’s official website.

1. Log in to vCenter Server: Use the vSphere Client to log in to the vCenter Server.

1. Select a Target Object: Choose the target object on which you want to configure Application Performance Management settings. It could be a cluster, a host, a VM, etc.

1. Navigate to Monitor Tab: In the object’s settings, navigate to the ‘Monitor’ tab. You will see a number of performance management options.

1. Navigate to vSphere DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler): Under vSphere DRS, you can enable it to balance the load across the hosts in the cluster. This optimizes the performance of the applications running on the virtual machines in that cluster.

1. Set vSphere HA (High Availability): Under vSphere HA, customize the settings for host failures and VM monitoring. Configuring these settings ensures that applications running on virtual machines remain accessible in case of host failures.

1. Enable vSphere FT (Fault Tolerance): By enabling Fault Tolerance (FT) you ensure that your application remains accessible and its operation continues even in case of VM failure.

1. Setup Alarms: You can setup performance alarms in vCenter Server for CPU, memory, network and disk usage which will alert you in case of irregularities.

Remember to save the configurations you made to ensure they are applied.

For a more optimal Application Performance Management, VMware offers a separate product called vRealize Operations Manager. It provides operations management with visibility across physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures. It gives actionable insights about the performance, capacity, and configuration of the infrastructure as well as applications running on it.
