How are locks handled in WebDAV?

WebDAV allows for locking of resources using two different types of locks:

1. Shared Locks: A shared lock allows multiple users to access the locked resource for reading but only one user can modify the resource at any given time.

1. Exclusive Locks: An exclusive lock allows only one user to access the locked resource for reading or writing, preventing other users from accessing the resource until the lock is released.

WebDAV locks are implemented using the following mechanisms:

1. Locks are requested and obtained using the LOCK method.

1. Locks can be released using either the UNLOCK method or by using a time-out mechanism which automatically releases the lock after a specified period.

1. If a user attempts to modify a locked resource, the server will return a 423 (Locked) status code.

1. Locks can be inherited by child resources in a collection, allowing entire folders to be locked for editing.

1. Locking information is stored in a Lock-Info XML element within the resource’s properties.
